How to Protect Yourself This Flu Season
Oct 23, 2026
Flu season is here. The flu spreads easily in the fall and winter, and for some people it can lead to serious illness. The good news: a few simple habits go a long way toward keeping you and your family healthy.
Get your flu shot — book now
The flu shot is your best protection. It takes about two weeks to start working, so the best time to get it is in October or early November.
Book your flu shot online — it only takes a minute.
Everyday habits that protect you
- Wash your hands often. Use soap and water for 20 seconds, especially before eating. Use hand sanitizer when you can’t wash.
- Keep your hands away from your face. Germs get in through your eyes, nose and mouth.
- Stay active and eat well. Regular exercise, varied meals and plenty of fluids support your immune system.
- Don’t smoke. Smoking weakens your airways’ natural defences.
- Avoid close contact with sick people. Consider wearing a mask in crowded indoor places during flu season.
- Let in fresh air. Open a window or use an air purifier at home.
- Ask about vitamin D. Many people run low in winter — ask us if a supplement is right for you.
If you get sick
- Stay home and rest until your fever has been gone for 24 hours.
- Cover coughs and sneezes with a tissue or your elbow.
- Drink plenty of fluids.
- Call early if you’re at higher risk. If you are 65 or older, pregnant, or have a long-term health condition, call your doctor or pharmacist within 48 hours of your symptoms starting. Flu medicine works best when started early.
When to get medical help right away
Seek care immediately if you have:
- Trouble breathing
- Chest pain
- Confusion
- A fever that comes back after getting better
- Signs of dehydration (very little urine, dizziness, dry mouth)
