A Salty Situation

Did you know that an adult needs 1500mg of sodium a day?

However, a recent infographic from Health Canada reveals that 3 out of 5 Canadians exceed the amount of sodium recommended, with an average intake around 2760mg per day!

Excess sodium is linked to high blood pressure, heart disease and stroke. The top dietary sources of sodium tend to come from highly processed foods such as frozen meals, processed meats, canned soups and sauces. Even a single restaurant meal can contain an entire day’s worth of recommended sodium intake. Health Canada continues efforts through its Health Eating Strategy to reduce sodium in processed foods.

If you are watching your sodium intake, a good goal would be to aim 1500-2000mg of sodium a day.
