We had several faculty members receive Awards of Excellence from the University of Toronto Department of Family and Community Medicine (DFCM). These were handed out on June 20, 2019. Congratulations to our colleagues for this well deserved recognition.

  • Melanie Henry – DFCM Award for Excellence in Global Health
  • Dr. Michelle Homer – DFCM Award for Excellence in Faculty Development
  • Dr. John Maxted – DFCM Award for Excellence in QI & Innovation

Sam Leitenberg Award

Congratulations to Dr. Melissa Ng. Dr. Ng, a Family Medicine Resident at Markham Stouffville Hospital (Health For All FHT) received the Sam Leitenberg Award for the Humanitarian Practice of Family and Community Medicine at the Central DFCM Graduation Event held at the University of Toronto. Congratulations, Melissa!  We are so proud of you!

Dr. Amanda West (photo attached), Dr. Maya Maliakkal, and Dr. Maxted had the privilege of attending this event, the first of its kind for the DFCM.  We were thrilled to see Melissa, our resident, chosen for this prestigious award from all of the 2nd year FM Residents at the University of Toronto!  In recognition of its importance, Melissa was the only Resident of the evening invited to give a speech to us and her graduating peers.  She did very well!

The Sam Leitenberg Award for the Humanitarian Practice of Family and Community Medicine is given annually to the PGY2 Resident in Family and Community Medicine who best exemplifies the qualities Dr. Leitenberg embodied.  These include recognizing the central importance of the doctor-patient relationship, providing exemplary care to patients, treating patients and family members with compassion, empathy, and respect as well demonstrating superior diagnostic and clinical skills. Melissa would agree that her excellence represents the kind of Residents we are pleased to train and be associated with at Markham Stouffville Hospital! Once again, congratulations to Dr. Melissa Ng and our thanks for being such an inspiration to all of us!

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for Insomnia

For their outstanding achievements related to the Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for Insomnia initiative and for their work on sedative-hypnotic deprescribing, the team of Dr. Karuna Gupta, Social Worker Stefanie Belli, Program & IT Administrator Zhanying Shi and Clinical Pharmacist Lindsay Wong were selected as the 2019 recipient of the Department of Family and Community Medicine Quality & Innovation Program Faculty & Staff Impact Award. This effort has changed how insomnia is managed at HFA in faculty, resident, and IHP practices. Congratulations to the entire team for an outstanding achievement!
